Human Concerns

A family of faith reaching out…

FURNITURE

We are in the “gently used” furniture business.  We are always in need of beds (complete sets – springs, mattress and frame), dinette sets, living room furniture and the basic accessories; linens, pillows, dishes, lamps, etc.  --  GENTLY USED ONLY, please.  Dick Thackston has been picking up donations and delivering to those in need for over a year.  DICK NEEDS HELP.  We really need a small group (3 or 4) folks who can help.  Volunteers need to be in good physical shape to lift and haul furniture.  If you can help or have furniture to donate, please call Dick Thackston at 796-7865 or Mary Lou Marple at 275-7962.

 ASSISTING THE HANDICAPPED

A neighbor who lives in Mason Woods cannot afford to pay the going rate for having her lawn mowed.  Painters were painting her house but wouldn’t paint the “A” frame of her roof line because of the height.  Her lawn probably needs to be cut every two weeks during the summer.  It would probably take a couple of folks willing to climb a ladder a few hours to finish painting her house.  She already has the paint.  CAN YOU HELP?  Please call Mary Lou Marple at the parish office (275-7962 x15).

ALS PATIENT AND WIFE NEED SUPPORT

Rene and Virginia Rodas live nearby.  Rene is in the advanced stages of ALS.  He is Hispanic but speaks English.  His wife, Virginia, is a school bus driver.  She is not Catholic.  Virginia is running ragged between being Rene’s caregiver and meeting her route responsibilities.  Gil Harrison and his wife, Sharon, exemplified a husband and wife team.  Gil, who is finally free of his motorized wheel chair and at peace in the heart of God, introduced many in our parish community to the complexities and horrors of the incurable ALS.  However, Gil and Sharon gifted us by showing that life, even with limitations, lived in love and lived in community strengthens faith, builds friendships and enables an indescribable joy for those involved.  Many at St. Augustine were present to Gil and Sharon.  Gil, Sharon and Julie, their daughter, were regular fixtures at the 5:30 Mass.  Thanks to all for your consistent prayers and presence to the Harrison family.  Now, Sharon has asked if we could help Rene and Virginia.  They are very isolated.  If you can go to the grocery store, mow their grass, sit with Rene while Virginia drives the bus, fix a meal or two… please call Mary Lou Marple at the parish office or Sharon Harrison at 748-7230.
