            Understanding the Invisible:  Reflecting on Aging with Civility
            This community-wide book discussion will focus on concepts of civility and conflict among the character in the book “The Giver” by Lois Lowry.  Participants of all ages are invited to read the book and join the conversation.

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, VA — The Chesterfield County Mental Health Support Services’ Service Coordination Team, will present the film, Henry O, at 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, May 15, at Meadowdale Library, 4301 Meadowdale Blvd., North Chesterfield, as part of the ReelAbilities: NY Disabilities Film Festival.
The film highlights the accomplishments of the world’s first blind sportscaster, Enrique Oliu, and the importance of perseverance and a supportive family. Original artwork by adult clients of the Chesterfield County Mental Health Support Services Department will be on display and a live discussion will follow the film.
This is one of six award-winning films celebrating diversity that the Weinstein Jewish Community Center, the Saul Schottenstein Foundation B and community partners are sponsoring in the Greater-Richmond area May 14-21. Each film is followed by discussions or other engaging programs in an effort to promote awareness and appreciation of people with disabilities. The film schedule follows:
·     Shooting Beauty — Fashion photographer Courtney Bent’s career takes an unexpected turn when she discovers a hidden world of beauty at a center for people living with significant disabilities.

·     Ben X —Ben, a socially awkward boy who is bullied at school, finds an escape in his favorite online computer game, where he feels safe, strong and in control of his surroundings.

·     Henry O — Blind since birth, Enrique (Henry) Oliu, follows his dreams to become a commentator for Florida’s Tampa Bay Rays.

·     Crooked Beauty — Artist-activist Jacks Ashley McNamara takes a transformative journey from troubled childhood to psych-ward patient to pioneering mental-health advocate.

·     Warrior Champions — After losing limbs or suffering paralysis, four Iraq War veterans set out to turn the horrors of war into Olympic dreams.

·     Praying with Lior — Throughout his lifetime, Lior, who has Down syndrome, has prayed with abandon. As his Bar Mitzvah, or Jewish coming-of-age ceremony, approaches, several people share their experiences of praying with Lior, which raise questions about what constitutes a disability and who really speaks with God.

Chesterfield County Senior Advocate & Disability Services has a program where volunteers call shut ins to check on them weekly. Call Debbie Leidheiser for further information on this program as well as more information on the Chesterfield County Senior Advocate & Disability Services.

Relative Connections is for older adults raising school-age children.  Grandparents and other older adults raising school-age children in Chesterfield County are invited to attend these 2011 gatherings to make connections and learn helpful information.  Meetings are free.  Register by calling the Senior Advocate at 768-7878 or by email at Leidheiserd@chesterfield.gov
