How do we clean the Communion vessels after Mass?
Cleaning the vessels is best done after the liturgy. Right after Mass, the vessels may be taken to the sacristy. Any crumbs or fragments from the consecrated bread may be consumed directly or wiped with your finger into one of the Communion cups. Then rinse the bowl and pour the water into the cup. Swish the water in the cup around and then drink it. Do the same with all the vessels. Once you have done this, clean the vessels with soap and water.
CLEANING THE COMMUNION VESSELS
It has been brought to my attention that some Extraordinary Ministers 0f Holy Communion are not following the proper procedures in cleaning the Communion vessels.
1. A. Prior to distributing the Body of Christ, ministers distributing the Blood of Christ need to fully open the purificator, the cloth used to wipe the Communion cup.
B. The cup contains the Body of Christ and should be handed to the communicant not held in a manner that limits the communicant receiving the Blood of Christ.
C. Upon a communicant receiving Communion, the cup is returned to the Minister who is required be wiped both on the inside and outside of the cup lip.
D. Upon completing the wiping both the cup and the purificator should be rotated one/quarter (1/4) turn in preparation for the next Communicant receiving.
E. Any residue in the cup must be consumed.
F. The cup should then be dried and the purificator placed in the basket beside the sink. The hands of the Minister should then be washed and dried in the room with the vestments not in the bathroom.
2. For the Ministers distributing the Body of Christ it is best to leave the Communion Plate on the table in the sacristy for the Mass Coordinators to clean..
3. It is particularly important for the Ministers distributing the Body of Christ to thoroughly rinse and dry their hands after completing the distribution of Communion. Again, this is required to be done by each Minister distributing communion at the sink in the room with the vestments not in the bathroom.
